The problem we modern humans face is that we exposed to low level poisons in our food, air, and water over a long term that eventually leads to accumulations that are toxic and become a causative factor in disease. Low level poisons coupled with depleted foods equals immune system damage, disease, and early aging.
Cleansing is often used as a way to improve the diet, lose weight, increase energy and improve digestion. Typically these programs are designed to support the body's natural cleansing mechanisms in the removal of toxins. This is important because toxin accumulation in the body and poor nutrition contribute to ill health and chronic disease. Our industrial world produces and exposes us to thousands of chemicals through the air, the water supply, and our foods. Daily, we are exposed to pollutants, pesticides and household chemicals which research shows are not biodegradable and which are present in our bodies by the hundreds. Evidence suggests many of these chemicals can alter or disrupt our immune, endocrine, nervous, and reproductive systems. Fortunately, our bodies have built-in defense systems designed to eliminate these toxins to maintain health. However, research shows that our bodies are becoming overburdened by repeated toxic exposure. In addition, many of us are not eating healthy enough to support our our body's detoxification functions. This leads to what researchers call "oxidative stress." Oxidative stress is thought to be a major contributor to many chronic diseases including cardiovascular disease, cancer, neurological disease, autoimmune disease and diabetes. What is Cleansing? Cleansing is a dietary practice more commonly known as detoxification or fasting. It is used to promote health and healing by reducing toxic intake and removing toxins from the body. The concept of cleansing has a long history in natural medicine dating back thousands of years to the time of the Greeks. Many alternative medical practices, including naturopathic, Chinese, and Ayervedic medicine, still utilize cleansing as part of their health traditions. Today, cleansing has become extremely popular, with several detox programs available on the market. the wide variety of cleansing programs include different combinations of therapeutic components such as cleansing herbs, juicing, water fasting, whole food, and raw food diets.
What do the experts say? There is no empirical scientific evidence on the health effects of detoxification. However, studies on various plants and herbs show positive effects on certain detoxification organ systems. Caloric restriction is one way to accomplish this. Caloric restriction is the practice of reducing caloric intake. Research conducted over the past 70 years has shown that reducing the consumption of dietary calories 30% to 40% can extend the lifespan in a number of animal species. It is believed to slow the process of aging and delay the onset of chronic disease associated with aging. Animal studies show that caloric restriction can reduce the incidence of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, autoimmune disorders, and neurological decline. Long term studies of caloric restriction in non-human primates and shorter, more limited studies in humans demonstrated decreased body weight, lower blood pressure and blood lipids as well as regulation of blood sugar. Caloric restriction is also related to decreased free radical production; which may help reduce oxidative stress. What does the Detox Program entail? Many people who suffer from environmental allergies or chemical sensitivities find this aspect of the program very helpful and are often free of symptoms within just a few days of starting the program
100 equals the number of grams of carbohydrates you are allowed to eat as grains, starches, and sugars. The number is low because we want the body to use alternate pathways for energy generation. Any carbohydrates that are eaten and not readily needed for energy are stored as glycogen in the liver. While this is normal physiology ... we don’t want that. Instead we want the liver to STOP storing carbs and START breaking down adipose tissue (fat) for energy. And this brings us to the second number... 1300 / 1500 are the Total Caloric Intake (TCI) for women and men per day; respectively. As my high school physic teacher once told me “...you can’t break the second law of thermodynamics...” Energy is neither created nor destroyed, merely transformed. My corollary to this law is that “calories are neither created nor destoryed they are either used for energy or stored as fat.” Measure these two numbers every day and you will transform your awareness of the energy content of food and what you’re body really needs for energy on a daily basis.
The Detox features fruits and vegetables prominently
“My blood pressure has been yo-yo-ing on medication for years, I finally feel like something is working since the purification plan.” ~Elfrieda, aged 84, Catskill, NY “Between my shoulder blades was killing me – that’s better. I also have wrists again.” ~Anne, aged 45, Cairo, NY “I lost 15 pounds in 2 weeks. I realized going through the purification program that I needed to make a commitment to my health and I’m feeling good.” ~Pearl, aged 64, Ravena, NY “I went on the purification plan hoping to improve my allergies and energy level after a long battle with Candida. I was quite surprised at how both improved over the three week period and how I’ve continued to get better. ” ~Marlene, aged 71, Schenectady, NY What do I eat after the Detox? The key to long term success after the detox program is not to slip back into old patterns. These patterns include:
The main recommendation is to adopt a low glycemic index diet . The development of insulin was an evolutionary survival mechanism to deal with times of famine. The problem today is that there is no famine. Eating carbhohydrate rich foods such as potatoes, rice, pasta, bread, candy, and carbohydrate rich vegetables such as corn; all have the effect of causing insulin spikes. These spikes result in storage of carbs in the form of TG (triglycerides) also known as body fat. This excess of insulin and fat in the blood leads directly to cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, strokes, high blood pressure, and obesity.
