What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a holistic therapy that helps to strengthen the immune system,  prevent disease, control pain, and improve the quality of life.  It's been used for over 3,000 years as the primary health care system in China and is widely used today in Asia, Europe and the U.S.  Based on scientific principles, it is recognized by the U.N. World Health Organization to successfully treat more than 40 conditions.

What is the Function of Acupuncture?

Like acupressure, acupuncture involves affecting the flow of energy in  the body's electromagnetic pathways. These pathways, referred to as meridians, are  one of the body's primary communication paths. Meridians correspond to various bodily  functions / organs. By unblocking and strengthening energy flow, the  acupuncturist helps to regulate the flow to different areas of the body.  Improved flow will keep the body in a more balanced state, so it can  improve or heal a variety of acute and chronic conditions, and enhance overall health and vitality.

About the Treatment

Acupuncture is often associated with the insertion of tiny  needles in key points throughout the body. This form of treatment is  generally painless, although patients may feel a heaviness, tingling or  a relaxed feeling in a tense muscle at the point(s) of insertion.  Those who receive acupuncture often not  only heal physically, but also experience new and profound states of  peace, tranquility, clarity and harmony. Delmar Wellness Center uses one time  disposable needles for all patients.

Acupuncture treatments may also involve the use of electrical  stimulation. We use an electrotherapy machine which operates with microcurrents. Patients  don't feel electricity or shocks during the treatment. Those  apprehensive about acupuncture needles, children, for example, may be more relaxed with the electrical  stimulation method.

Treatments may also involve the use of herbs and / or acupressure which are  both effective in strengthening and regulating energy flow throughout the body. When the acupuncturist performs acupressure,  no needles are used. Instead the acupuncturist presses his or her  fingers on key meridian points to stimulate or reduce the flow of vital  energy.

All treatment options are discussed with our patients to determine  what their preferences are and which options may be more beneficial to  each case.
